Throughout his life, Edward Gordon Craig designed and printed various bookplates for himself, his family and his friends. His son, Edward A. Craig described that Gordon Craig would bookplates as a ‘special honour’ bestowed ‘on people he liked, loved, or wanted to impress’ (Craig, Gordon Craig, 1968, p.106-107).
He designed bookplates for his mother Ellen Terry, who also commissioned him to design plates for her own friends as acquaintances.
