E.A. Craig collection: Correspondence between Edward Gordon Craig and Martin Shaw
Sub-series
1899-1937
Composer Martin Shaw made friends with Edward Gordon in 1897 and he introduced Shaw to the way music could stimulate the imagination. Together they mounted an innovative production of ‘Dido and Aeneas’ for the Purcell Operatic Society in 1900. It was the start of a friendship that lasted until Shaw’s death. At Gordon Craig’s suggestion, Shaw also spent a brief time as Isadora Duncan’s conductor.
They would regularly correspond regularly and Shaw was someone with whom Craig felt he could relate all his personal and professional problems and thoughts.
