Sitwell, Sacheverell (1897-1988)

Sir Sacheverell Sitwell, sixth baronet, was born on 15th November 1897 in Scarborough. He was the third child of Sir George Reresby Sitwell, fourth baronet, and Lady Ida Emily Augusta Denison, daughter of the first early of Londesborough.

Sitwell recalled a happy childhood, spent with Osbert and Edith within the Sitwell literary circle. He attended Eton College from 1911 to 1916. From 1916 to 1920 he served in the Grenadier Guards; he was made lieutenant in 1918. After his military service concluded he proceeded to Balliol College, Oxford, but left soon afterwards to pursue his artistic career alongside Osbert and Edith.

Sitwell’s first two volumes volumes of poetry were not well received, but the publication in 1924 of Southern Baroque Art, his first prose work, was markedly more enthusiastic. Other works of art cricitism and travel writing followed.

In 1925 Sitwell married Georgia Doble. The couple had two sons, Francis and Reresby. In 1969, after Osbert’s death, Sacheverell succeeded to the baronetcy. He was appointed Companion of Honour in 1984.

Sacheverell Sitwell died on 1 October 1988.
