Benjamin Hannen (1830-1906) was the third son of James Hannen (1788-1857) and Susanna Lee (1799-1879). He was educated in Belgium and Germany and studied theatre and dancing. He became a partner in Holland and Hannen, the family firm, which constructed many important buildings and structures including the Holborn Bars, the Cenotaph, County Hall, Ironmongers' Hall, Unilever House, South Africa House, the Senate building of the University of London and the Royal Festival Hall - in London; and the Cunard Building in Liverpool. Two of his sons, Benjamin and Edward (Ted) succeeded him as partners in the family firm. Benjamin pursued his theatrical interests and directed an amateur theatrical company, which staged productions privately in his London home. He married Fanny Woodhouse and they had four children:
