The first file contains typescript and manuscript extracts from his father’s letters home during the war while he was stationed in North Africa. These were mainly used for this poem but the material is reflected throughout the book
The second file contains 4 autograph manuscripts and 24 corrected typescripts of the poem
A number of extracts from these early drafts were omitted from the final poem, but used to create separate poems. These include the first part of ‘Returning Solider’ and ‘A Little While Longer’
