Hugo Williams: ‘All the Time in the World’ by Hugo Williams: Related papers
Sub-series
1963-1966
1 box containing 24 items
This was Williams's first travel book, based on his diaries as he journeyed through Israel, Persia, India, Malaya, Thailand, Japan, Australia, Tahiti and the French West Indies at the age of 21.
The sub-series is made up of 23 diaries which allow readers to track his journey and provide his initial thoughts on the places he visited. The diaries were compiled as Williams travelled around and as a result some of the volumes are beginning to disintegrate. The entries are very narrative in approach, describing the journey and the route he took. Occasionally Williams has drawn a map showing his route or another small sketch. He would also note the names and addresses of though he met on route.
In certain entries they acted as a commonplace book, where Williams would write down extracts of a letter or other writing – such as Shelley, Dylan Thomas or Dostoevsky.
Some verses are contained in these volumes although none of these appear to directly relate to his travels. However he referred to them as ‘facile soliloquies’ which distracted him from composing poems. These become more common as his trip went on and increasingly poems which were later revised for publication in ‘Symptoms of Loss’ begin to appear.
The volumes also act as a manuscript for his book ‘All the Time in the World, which drew heavily on the diaries; however they have been heavily edited and revised in between. While some extracts in the diaries resemble the final text strongly, other have been adapted, edited or omitted completely. No intermediate draft or typescripts for the final text.
