Administrative / Biographical history

Frederick Edwin Phillips (1881-1943) was born in Rode, Somerset, in 1881. Trained as a plasterer, he enlisted in the British Army’s Royal Engineers in 1902. He served as a sapper until 1905, when he transferred to the Army Reserve. Phillips was mobilised in August 1914 at the outbreak of the World War I, joining the 7th Field Company, Royal Engineers, part of the 4th Division of the British Expeditionary Force. He served in France and Belgium from September 1914 to October 1915, participating in key operations during the early stages of the war. His duties included constructing bridges over the Marne and Aisne rivers, building barbed-wire barricades in front of trenches, creating gun emplacements, repairing roads, carrying out demolitions, and laying mines, including during the fighting at Ypres. After returning to England at the end of his period of engagement, he was discharged from the Army in October 1915, having completed 13 years of service. He had married Beatrice Osment in 1908, and the couple had two children. Frederick Phillips died in 1943.
