Letters and field service postcards from James Frederick Norris to his parents, brother, grandfather and uncle, from before his departure from London to join his regiment in October 1917, his arrival in France and action in battles on the Western Front until the Armistice. Also included are a few letters about his post-war regimental duties at locations in Germany until early 1919, when he returned to the 19th Royal Hussars’ depot at Ewshott, Hampshire, to help form the regiment for further duties overseas. The letters from London include references to two bombings in London in October 1917. One of the letters written shortly after his arrival in France has words cut out by a censor
