Ella Giffard (1888–1973) was the daughter of Admiral George Augustus Giffard (1849–1925) and Elenor Brine. She was born in Marlborough, Wiltshire, in 1888. Before the First World War she lived with her family at Bishop’s Waltham, Hampshire. From 1915 to 1919 she trained and served as a nurse with the Voluntary Aid Detachment at the 1st Southern General Hospital, Edgbaston, Birmingham, a major military hospital for the treatment of war casualties. After the war she lived in Southsea, Portsmouth, where she remained until her death in 1973, aged 85.

Two autograph books kept by Ella Giffard during her service as a VAD nurse at the 1st Southern General Hospital, Edgbaston, Birmingham, 1916–1919, containing manuscript entries, illustrations, and watercolour drawings contributed by Australian, South African, and British servicemen recuperating at the hospital. The collection also includes a notebook of manuscript prayers written for members of the Giffard family, with dates of birth, together with a small group of loosely inserted items: notes on heraldry, two incomplete letters concerning Giffard family history, three unidentified photographs, and a postcard from Ella to her mother
