Biographical note

Varley is better known as a watercolour artist. A founder member of the Water-Colour Society, he was a prolific exhibitor of paintings and an enthusiastic drawing-master, producing amongst other manuals, a ‘Treatise on the Principles of Landscape Design’ (1816-21).
