Content (description)

The nude gladiator stretches forward with his left arm, which once held his shield, high in front of him. His right arm, which once held a sword, is by his side. The statue is shown from the side, stepping to the viewer's right.
Inscribed below the plinth: Michel Monier sculp. Dessinee et gravee par S. Thomassin Graveur du Roy 1717/
Le Gladiateur/ Entre les differentes sortes de Gladiateurs, quon comprenoit tous sous le nom general d'Athlete, Cette/ figure represente un de ceux que se battoinet a coup de poing. Le lieu de leurs Combats a Rome etoit/ l'Amphitreatre, ou le Peuple s'assembloit pour goutter ce ridicul plaisir./ Cette statue est de marbre, Copiee d'apres l'antique par Michel Monier de Blois.
