Content (description)

The nude bearded satyr, wearing a vine wreath, leans on a high tree trunk on his left and holds in his arms a nude infant, who gestures with his left hand and points to the tree trunk with his right. A vine twists around the trunk and a skin falls over it from the satyr's arm.
Inscribed below, inside frame: S. Thomassin Graveur du Roy Sculpsit 1717.
Inscribed below: Faune/ Le Sculpteur voulant marquer le Caractere d'un Faune qui folastre, nous le represente/ tenant entre ses bras un Enfant./ Cette statue est copiee par Maziere de Pontoise d'apres l'Antique qui est une des plus/ belles figures de Rome.
