Content (description)

Venus, with a drape round her hips and over her right arm, a bracelet on her upper right arm, stands looking at herself in an ornate mirror in her right hand. In her left hand she holds up a small globe or an apple. Her hair is bound up beneath a fillet, the ends of which fall on to her shoulders.
Inscribed below inside frame: S. Thomassin Sculptor Regius C.P.R
Inscribed below: Venus d'Arles/ Cette antique de marbre est ainsy nommee parcequ'elle a este trouvee a Arles en fouillant des/ruines. On la placee a Versailles, dans la grande Gallerie, et les deux bras qui luy manquoient/ ont ete restaures par Mr Girardon./ Se vend a Paris chez S. Thomassin rue St Jacques vis a vis la rue du Platre a l'Image S Jean avec Privil. du Roy.
