Content (description)

The Hermaphrodite lies asleep on a padded couch, with his back to the viewer. He rests his head on his arms on a cushion.
Inscribed beneath, inside frame: S. Thomassin sculp.
Inscribed beneath: Hermaphrodite/ Ovide a feint qu'hermaphrodite etoit fils de Mercure et de Venus, sur les observations de quelque Naturaliste qui ont remarque que l'enfant qui nait pendant la conjonction/de ces deux planettes est quelque fois Hermaphrodite, et qu'il participe qux deux Sexes, cette figure Antique est aux pallais Bourguese a Rome./ Il a este coppie par Martin Carlier de Pienne en Picardie Sculpteur du Roy. Cette figure de Marbre blanc est place a Versaille, et designe et grave par S. Thomassin graveur du Roy 1721.
