Description
Painted landscape view; farming scene with horses; figure of a man in the foreground
Comments
This view of an agricultural scene set in Lincolnshire includes three heavy horses in the middle distance pulling a single plough. In the foreground, a warrener (professional rabbit hunter) pauses to catch his breath while digging out a rabbit warren, his dog at his side. Peter de Wint favoured painting views of open fields, capturing the landscape as it was before the enclosure and partitioning of arable land. It was a sight that was largely lost by the early 19th century. At times de Wint undoubtedly sought out remaining undivided fields for the subjects of his paintings, but he may also have removed hedgerows and fencing in creating his works, to better serve his preference for wide horizontal
