Comments
At the centre of this agricultural scene are three heavy horses, a cart full of hay and several agricultural workers.
Peter de Wint favoured painting views of open fields, capturing the landscape as it was before the division and privatisation of land, known as enclosure. Open fields were a sight that had largely been lost by the early 19th century. At times, de Wint undoubtedly sought out remaining undivided fields for the subjects of his paintings, but he may also have avoided painting the existing hedgerows and fencing to better serve his preference for wide horizontal compositions.
