Description
Half-length painted portrait of a young man wearing a white shirt and grey waistcoat and black necktie, holding a cricket bat that rests over one shoulder
Comments
Portraitist Margaret Sarah Carpenter painted several 'Leaving Portraits' of Eton boys. Each year, on completion of their time at the school, a few distinguished pupils were asked by the Head Master to leave a portrait as well as the usual leaving fee. However, the practice gradually spread to other schoolmasters. This portrait may have been painted for Edward Coleridge (1800–1883), who became Lower Master (Head of the Lower School) at Eton in 1850. Coleridge requested dozens of Leaving Portraits from boys, sending them to sit for either George Richmond or Margaret Carpenter, but later returned the works to the sitters.
At Eton 1834-42, Milner was painted with his cricket bat.
