Administrative / Biographical history
Declamations were public speeches, usually in Latin, and performed in front of a large audience and distinguished guests. Under Henry Bland, Head Master 1720-1728, a new system of declamations was introduced, consisting of original, opposing arguments on a single topic, while speeches were memorised from sources such as Livy or Sallust. Originally held at Election, they became part of the Fourth of June celebrations, and were given by the top 20 boys in the school only. There is a record in John Evelyn's diaries of a boy making a Latin declamation in 1680.
