Title
Head Master: Leavers' Letters
Level
Series
Administrative / Biographical history
Every leaver sees the Head Master individually to 'take leave'. He brings with him a letter from his house master and from his tutor, outlining his career at Eton and mentioning future plans, and also a registry card with a photograph taken when he arrived. The system of leavers' letters was started by Anthony Chenevix-Trench although taking leave was an old custom, and was the occasion on which the departing boy tactfully left his leaving money as a present for the Head Master. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, leavers' letters were not fully produced for 2020 leavers, UCAS forms were collected by the archives from 2020 - 2022 instead (SCH HM 08 18).
