John Lewis was educated at King's College, Auckland, and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. From 1964-1970, apart from a year as a Junior Lecturer in classics at Auckland Univeristy in 1965, he taught at King's College and in 1971 he became an assistant master at Eton. He was appointed Master-in-College in 1975 and from 1980-1994 he was Head Master of Geelong Grammar School, Australia.
