Papers of John Foster, Head Master 1765 - 1773
Sub-fonds
John Foster (1731-1774) was a King's Scholar at Eton. He matriculated at King's in 1748, becoming a Fellow in 1751. This was given up in 1758, when he received the living of Shrawardine, Shropshire, from Thomas Montfort, whom he had tutored. He was an assistant master at Eton from 1754, being appointed Head Master in 1765. Although he was a distinguished classical scholar, his period was not a distinguished one, with rebellions among the boys and a fall in numbers. In 1772 he was appointed a Canon of Windsor. His health weakened by the strain of his work, he died abroad at Spa and was buried in Windsor.
