R.D. Baird: Boys' files
Sub-series
The boys's files show very clearly how attitudes to work and university entrance were changing at this time. A Levels did not have the importance now attached to them and boys who failed dismally at O Level nevertheless stayed on and even became specialists but increasingly the need to get good results is emphasised. Oxford and Cambridge were still the universities of choice (one parent wrote that they had not paid for an education at Summerfield and Eton for their son to go to the University of North Staffordshire) but entrance there was no longer almost guaranteed. Now some of the boys would probably not even get into Eton in the first place.
