Papers of Richard Okes, Lower Master 1838 - 1850
Series
Okes was a King's Scholar at Eton and went on to King's in 1817. He was Browne's medallist in 1819 and 1820, when he became a Fellow of King's, and graduated in 1822, in which year he was ordained. The following year he returned to Eton as an assistant master, resigning his fellowship following his marriage in 1826. In 1838 he was elected Lower Master and in 1850 became Provost of King's, where he persuaded the college to abolish the Kingsmen's privilege of being awarded a degree without examination. He continued to take an active interest in Eton affairs, as shown by correspondence with various Provosts and Head Masters, and following the revision of the statutes in 1871 became a member of the New Governing Body.
