At Eton in Oscar Browning's house from 1865.3 - 1870.2, he returned to Eton as an assistant master in 1876 after a degree at Balliol College, Oxford. He retired in 1913 although returned in September 1914 and remained until December 1919. He played a great part in preserving the College from building encroachment. He lived at Eton Wick, and was a great benefactor to the community. His arrangements with the College about the disposal of his property were complicated and the subject of numerous entries in the Provost and Fellows' minutes.
