Educated at Marlborough, Worcester College, Oxford and the RCA, he taught at Haileybury from 1923 - 1937, then at Eton until 1959. From 1959 until 1983 he was Curator of the Watts Gallery, Compton. In addition to his teaching he wrote books on a variety of subjects including Italic handwriting, of which he was a great teacher an champion, flowers, and flower illustration. He also wrote two books of autobiography.
