Administrative / Biographical history

An Army Class of 3 divisions was established in January 1887, with a fourth division (Army Class IV) added in 1890. The aim was 'to provide special teaching for the boy of average or below average ability to enable him to get into the Army from Eton without having to go to a Crammer'. Its work was completely separated from that of the rest of the school as the syllabus was dictated by army requirements and in practice provided a much broader education than the standard curriculum with its bias towards the classics. It also tended to be taught more by specialists for subjects such as history. Fifth Form boys were admitted after passing a qualifying exam in French and Mathematics.
