Published in 85 parts, 1802-1820. Collective title-leaves dated 1819 for the text and 1820 for the plates volumes (and undated half-title leaves) were issued with the final parts. Some parts exist in more than one edition (a "Second edition" is sometimes identified in the caption title of an individual part).
Consists of 39 volumes of text, numbered I-XXXIX, and six volumes of plates numbered "Plates. Vol. I [-VI] ...".
"Printed by A. Strahan ..." - verso of each half-title or title-leaf etc. The individual parts in vols. 1-30 have the imprint of Strahan and Preston.
The text is printed in two columns, and is unpaginated.
Vol. 1 includes a portrait frontispiece. The other plates are arranged alphabetically by subject, with natural history and maps placed at the end of the sequence, occupying vols. 5 and 6 respectively. The plates are often numbered within each subject group. Some plates are folded (notably those for "Naval architecture" and the maps).
Vol. 30 includes addenda and corrigenda, a "Catalogue and analysis of the plates to Rees's Cyclopædia ..." and an "Index of the plates.".
Imprint varies. In later vols. James Black and Son have been dropped, and "Ogle Duncan and Co." added.
