In 1986 an appeal was launched among Old Etonians to raise the funds for a prize for science with the same status as the Newcastle and Rosebury Scholarships. The first competition took place in 1987 and was awarded to C.G. Egerton-Warburton, OS. The prize is named after Sir Julian Huxley and is awarded annually on the basis of an examination.
