Cartulary containing Deeds relating to Pett and Broomhill, (the Grikes), Sussex 1. Agreement between the Abbey of Robertsbridge (1) and John de Gestlinges, son of Osbert de Ango, his wife Isabel, daughter of Philip de Gestlinges, and Richard de Hore, brother of John, on behalf of his son Henry and Henry's wife Agatha (2). The Abbey is to receive land in the Grikes which John had from Battle Abbey and land called le Firlond and to enclose it at the Abbey's expense. John takes one third of the arable land, to be chosen by lot, and 3 acres from the Abbot's portion. Provisions for maintenance of enclosures and payments. Henry and Agatha to confirm arrangement when of age. Witnesses: William Schingeham, William de St. Leodigarius, Robert de Manek', James de Northey, William de St. Leodigarius de Farnley and Alexander his son, Paulinus of Wychelsey, Geoffrey de Freching', Stephen son of Andrew, Herbert de Buchaole, Godfrey de Pette. 26 April 1243 2. Gift by Henry de Hore and Agatha his wife to William Godfrey and Cecilia their daughter as a marriage portion of a moiety of 28 1/2 acres with appurtenances in three parts in old and new Grikes, part of the fee of the Abbey of Battle. (Abuttals given). Witnesses: Richard de Hore, knight, William de Hastinge, Thomas de Degges, Ada de Franleghe, William de Sneylham, Hamo de la Stoke, John de Fresingeheye, Thomas de Gotesdene, John de Bromhamme, Gilbert de Pette, Reginald de Stelling and others. 3.Grant by William de Ore to William de Redwissche and his wife of 8 acres with appurtenances of which 7 acres are in Rameshorn and Longhemarshe and the eighth by the embankment at the Votheweld in the parish of Pett. Witnesses: Master John Pope, Rector of the church of Gestling, William le Longh, Stephen a Snopp', William Hugh, Gabriel Covent, William Lende, John de Lydeham, writer of the charter, and many others. 23 May 1322 (15 Edw II) 4. Grant by Elena widow of Henry Rakkele to Paulinus son of Robert of a fourth part of the manor of Pette together with her land in the marsh called Westmarsh on the southern side of the new town of Winchilsea, which came to her from her brother Richard, for £10. Witnesses: William of Hastings and William of Echynghamme, knights, John de Ore, John Havengot, William de Fremingham, John son of John Paulin, William de Snaylhamme, William le Long, Reginald Ingeland, Nicholas Goldhord, William Jakes and others.
