Content description

A series of leases, in boxes marked Leases Expired. They relate almost entirely to leases of boarding houses and other property within Eton. They give an interesting picture of the development of the town, many properties having barns and stables in the earlier documents. Properties were apparently frequently subdivided or combined. Familiar names of dames, masters and fellows gradually appear, as well as such Eton establishments as the booksellers Pote and Williams, and Rowland's. Occasionally documents other than leases or counterparts, such as surrenders or mortgages, are included, and these are noted.

Arrangement

There was very little sign of arrangement. There were some bundles but many more loose items, and the variety of boxes in which they were originally housed suggests they came to the archives at different times. Original bundles have been preserved but the number and disorder of the loose items made it impracticable to bring together every document relating to a single property, although that has been done if possible, most notably with later boarding house leases. Only the names of the parties have been recorded, with the assumption that the lessor is the College. For details of rent, term, covenants etc it will be necessary to consult the documents.
