Illness of Mrs Thackeray (Mrs Goodall's sister); writer in town on business, partly concerning Porny School; sorry at news of surrender of Valencia; Hitcham valued at £540 pa and he expects to clear £350; another volume by [George] Shaw on birds published; wants copy of Harwood's Alumni Etonenses to interleave and will buy some shells in exchange; the new bishop [probably William Jackson of Oxford], has not the merit of his predecessor and is called Bishop of Oporto because of his fondness for port; describes two ends of Strand, building works etc; is building a water closet in his new house; [Samuel Grove] Price to be Captain of the School; hopes he will conduct himself well enough to get a character for King's; note on book prices.
