Content description
Shells; lists his specimens and describes visit of Dr Leach [William Elford Leach]. Very bad year at Eton 'very little exceeding £900 clear' but over £1000 from Windsor owing to a great fall of timber; next year will be reversed. Fellows have had to give up £50 each and himself £100 to balance the books. 'I never was so pinched since I was first out of debt'. Sorry to lose Dean of Windsor [Edward Legge, elected Bishop of Oxford]; Lord Liverpool has behaved shabbily in not allowing him to retain the Deanery as the last five Deans were all bishops. The new Dean [Henry Lewis Hobart] is 'a good-natured, shy sporting Parson' and his canonry at Canterbury is filled by Hugh Percy, a former pupil.
