Changes in turnpikes between Eton and London; now cost 1s 8d. Work of devastation proceeds round St Martin in the Field's. Regrets death of his old friend the Bishop of St Asaph [John Luxmore]; election of [Martin] Shee to Royal Academy expected. Has come to London to renew his lease or purchase Dr Keate's house. Has received no money yet from Hitcham, Ilsley or Eton but the reason for the delay is need to make advances for drainage etc. at Chalcots. Athenaeum to move to new clubhouse in Pall Mall on the 8th February; already half the stage at the old building is occupied by the Union Literary Club. Reported that Lord Manchester is no longer in the Secretary of State's office. Rumours that Shee is a Roman Catholic and 'far gone in democratic politics'. Expensive 'whimsies' of royalty unpopular, especially the 'silly changes' at Windsor; works said to be nearly at a standstill for want of money.
