Provost Goodall: Letter to Joseph Goodall

Will have to travel to Beaconsfield or Aylesbury to use his Chesham vote and undertake a journey of 90 miles to vote as a Berkshire incumbent; if he considered Pusey's election secured he would remain at Eton. Fears Col. [Hanmer] will not succeed at Aylesbury; would be sorry to see him beaten by Dr Lee. Windsor in a ferment; three candidates are Ramsbottom, Sir John Beauvoir, a nominal radical, and Sir John Elbey, the Court candidate. Offers to propose Joseph for the Athenaeum. Had to decline a royal invitation to dine at St James' Palace as it was in the middle of the audit. Likely to be a petition against the sitting Windsor members for bribery; would not be surprised or sorry if the 'most corrupt' borough were disenfranchised. Advice of Palmer and Pusey's committee. An officer dressed as a woman personified old and new year at Colonel Vyse's ball. 'I fear that not a single conservative will be elected for that hotbed of radicalism the City of London'. The rancorous spirit of the dissenters will gain the mastery. Anne's health improves; her recent loss is not irreparable. PLACE: The Lodge, Eton
