Evening Assembly at Windsor Castle attended by Knights of the Garter; invited (as Provost) to dinner; much talk with Lord Grey. Coins. Arrangement of new bishops not settled; doubts if Shuttleworth will ascend the bench; if he does not it will be to his credit. Has just inspected at Evans's the ms. of Alcuin's copy of St Jerome's translation, bought in for £1500. Intends to attend meeting of Zoological Society; stormy meeting at the Lowther Rooms; 'I have never suffered such a squeezing since the days of football'. Dined at Lambeth Palace; 90 guests, including bishops and bishop-designate Longley [Charles Longley, Bishop of Ripon 1836] and many Etonians. Visited the panorama of Lima; unable to get into the exhibition at Somerset House but saw the plans for the Houses of Parliament; approves the 'most splendid display of Gothicisation'. Attended audit and election of the officers at the Horticultural Society; describes flower show. Rather disappointed by the diorama. Will have to miss the Eton Anniversary if he visits [Joseph] at Bromham. Bishopric of Lichfield has been offered to the Dean but he will not give the desired pledge; Lord Lichfield anxious he should accept it as he needs political support in the city. Attended a Drawing Room and their Majesties were gracious. Visited the Panorama of Thebes and saw several good portraits (listed).
