Provost Goodall: Letter to Joseph Goodall

The solitude of Eton is driven away by the return of the school. The entrances have been more numerous than at any preceding period. Since Wednesday thirty boys have been admitted. Election at Harrow [to Headmastership] lay between Wordsworth and Poole; only five of numerous candidates came up to scratch. Party in the Waterloo Gallery the previous day. Windsor receipts grow worse and worse; next half year will produce £52 instead of £400 or £500. Hears a good account of the Pro-Proctor. Have dined with the Keates. His nephew George [Irving] returned to school looking very well; 'I cannot say much for his task, It is a miserable performance'. Dr Harrison looked it over and corrected bad Latin into false quantities. PLACE: The Lodge, Eton College
