Content description
Coins; party at the Hallams. Distressed by letter about the Wellesleys [sons of Richard, eldest natural son of Marquess Wellesley], whose mother has been arrested for debt. Lady Hatherton [illegitimate daughter] has sent her £100. She cannot return to her house at Willowbrook owing to her debts; eldest boy may have a writership to India. Visitor [Bishop of Lincoln] has displeased him with a decision which alters the practice of 170 years; the appellant has died and so cannot be convicted of a wilful lie. College Tutor appointed Master of Peterhouse [William Hodgson]. Fourth of June to retain its privilege; Her Majesty's name made use of incorrectly. Thinks less evil arises from celebrating Montem closely after the Aquatics than keeping the company for four continuous days. Museum now a wonderful collection, especially the Antiquities. Glad Mr Hamilton has apologised to Mr Carlisle and returned to his duties as Vice-President of the Society of Antiquaries. PLACE: Athenaeum, London
