Death of the Thackerays' daughter; hopes they will not recall their eldest daughter from her aunt and uncle who are infinitely better calculated to superintend her education. Coins. Gifts of food. Does not think Bishop of Lincoln will grant a licence of Non-residence to Ashfield. Eton audit unsatisfactory; damage at Goldcliff above £2000 and repair of sea walls will cost at least £300, so despite voluntary sacrifice of £500 finances still in a deplorable state. At Windsor will not fall short of average.
