Seizures of contraband goods by French customs at Dieppe [apparently written in error for Havre]; sightseeing at Havre but did not go to the Heights. The Camilla was an excellent vessel. Spent the night at Yvetot; describes poor dinner and lack of attention by servants. Notes extensive cultivation of rape. Interesting journey to Rouen. Hoped to build a new iron spire on the Cathedral following the fire. Slept at Vernon. On to Paris; alteration in posting stages. At Meurice's Hotel. Walks in Paris; the Bourse and the Church of St Madeleine nearly completed. Rue de Rivoli much improved; at least three of gaps there in 1822 now filled up. Entertained the Baron at Very's; gives bill; accompanied him to his weekly reunion of 'savants' at the Bureau des Bulletins; met the elder brother of M. Champolion and others. An Etonian has called on him; death of his former valet de place and of the bookseller Pichard. Few English in Paris as yet. Joseph an excellent travelling companion. Dated from postmark.
