Attended service at Lewis Way's chapel in the Jardin de Marboeuf; description with sketch plan. Nearly 600 people present, at least 9/10ths English. Detailed account of sermon. Imitated manner of his uncle W. Cooke (Provost's old tutor) without his sweetness and power of voice. Joseph to Versailles. Accosted by converted Jew begging. Letter from Mr Way. Dinner at the Baron's; describes food; Bishop of Chalons sur Marne complains that Irish Catholics are not emancipated. 'It is melancholy how completely the French misunderstand every thing which regards England or English history'. Attempts to get passport; discovers Embassy has moved to Rue St Dominique; total confusion at new site but helped by Johnny Bligh, now attached to the Embassy. Better to apply for separate passport for Joseph at Turin, where he knows the Resident. Table d'Hote dinner at hotel, other guests English; visit to new theatre, Theatre de Madame. Wilkinson went to the Theatre de St Martin; main attraction a piece performed by monkeys, 'Jocko ou le siege de Bresil'. Joseph visits Pere Lachaise Cemetery. Postmarked 25 April.
