Description of mean approach to hotel; up many stairs; noise made by mules outside window. Took service at Chapel; pleased with Joseph's preaching and reading of epistle. Visit to British consul, Mr Sledling, who lives in rooms in the Palazzo di Spinola; the Duke of Spinola is a savant to whom writer has an introduction. Visit to Sir George and Lady Bowyer. Visit to garden of Palazzo of Andreas Doria; cannot, as story is, have stepped straight from terrace to ship. High price of goods; 20 pence for a toothbrush and more for French tooth powder. By government order 5 francs are paid for bringing parcels from coach; waiters do not dare carry them. Delightful walk along harbour walls; sightseeing; boat trip with Richard Battiscombe. Chain gangs seen at work. Zeal of police. Letter received; Grover will attend to opposition to canal at Weedon Beck [Weedon Bec]. Fine collection of pictures in Palazzo Rosso. Has seen in the garden of his banker (a Scot, and also American consul) an orange tree 35 feet high. Future plans. Is standing godfather at christening of Robert Battiscombe the next day, Joseph officiating. Postmarked 23 May.
