Struggles with bureaucracy; visit to Turin Museum ; meeting with Bonelli 'one of the greatest naturalists in Europe but one of the least of men'. Walked on the Corso where gentry show themselves in their carriages in the evening. Visit to Superga, 'a large and in some respects magnificent' edifice built by Victor Amadeus; part appeared either unfinished or ruined but the church was very fine. Single room in palace furnished for the King who attends a service and dines once a year but never sleeps there. Visit to vault where Kings of Sardinia buried with their consorts and families. Because often dines late has taken to eating an egg at breakfast. At Turin clocks strike hour twice. Journey to Alessandria; delays breakfast by sitting in wrong cafe; improvements in road made by French engineers. Journey to Genoa; peculiar size and shape of wine casks - 'a set of ninepins for Brobdingnagian children'. Thanks for letter; sorrow at death of Mr Stevenson; Bishop of Chichester has made a wrong application as livings belong to Windsor and not Eton, but Mr Brown will put the business in train. Inhabitants of Hamworthy have treated Mr Irving disrepectfully; College has no funds and the anonymous letter received will not forward their cause. Steam packet from Genoa to England would not have enough trade; Joseph hopes to get a felucca to Nice, then to Paris in two stages via Lyon. Refers to appointment of Matthew Irving (nephew-in-law) as Royal Chaplain. Many military in Alessandria; apartments so clean he did not grudge expense. Little memory of recent battles among the people. At inn in Novi where they breakfasted, sign saying that Princess Caroline, the Archduchess of Parma, and the King of Sardinia had all stopped there. New road starts at Novi. no expense spared to make it safe. Entry into Genoa; visit to Richard Battiscombe and his family. Future plans. Postmarked 20 May.
