Journey to Chambery; easy passage through customs. Journey to Modane; hot and dusty but very beautiful. Between St Jean de Maurienne and St Michel saw procession asking St Julien for rain. Journey to Susa via Lanslebourg; toasted Bell's birthday in Asti and champagne; rails and posts on mountain roads; benefits of Napoleon; much bleaker. 26 posts manned by three cantoniers, who at government expense keep roads in order and assist travellers. Unwitting fraud on Sardinian Government by underpaying tax on horses and mules. Inspected arch of Augustus Caesar at Susa. Journey to Turin; King of Sardinia's palace at Rivoli. Throughout Savoy French the most common language, often better spoken than by lower orders in the provinces (now departements). Visit to Teatro di Carignano; all light thrown on stage, hard to see who is in the boxes; play Agnes Fitzhenry, based on an English novel. Ate green peas and strawberries. Heat still endurable. Postmarked 16 May.
