Dijon; buildings mainly of stone; three deserted churches, two now used for military purposes. 'In no part of France have I seen more genteel people'. Fine asparagus every day. Joseph's company very agreeable; his knowledge of birds and agriculture. 'Cabinets inodores' on this route much cleaner than on the Lyons route. Arrival at Geneva; delay at Dole, with which unimpressed. Ascent from Poligny; mgnificent view. Night at Champagnole. Last stage before it very steep 'That horses, if they could speak, would have cried out 'long live Napoleon the road maker' there can be little doubt'. Customs at Rousses; official very slow; details of duty repaid. Storms after crossing. Views, including Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva. Visit to Voltaire's rooms. Arrival at Geneva. Describes rooms. Summarises views on France; in area through which they passed more attention to cleanliness than further west; lower ranks very civil. Delivery of Mrs Sumner's packet; tea with her; fellow guests including Mrs Hersch and the lady who painted a portrait of Mrs MacNiven. Postmarked 9 May.
