The records of the College's estates were originally arranged by estate, each one having a drawer in College Library. These records were catalogued by Noel Blakiston as ECR - Eton College Records - and included most of the earliest deeds relating to the estates, as well as some later leases and a good deal of other material.( Maps were generally removed and dealt with separately). However, from the 19th century onwards, extensive series of leases and drafts which were not part of this system were created, including a number of files relating to land transactions or related estate matters such as chancel responsibility. These are the records listed here, along with title deeds of properties acquired in the 19th and 20th century and held in the Estates Manager's office until transfer to the archives in the 1990s. Some of the lawyers' files relate to more general legal matters.
Although the lawyers' files and bundles are not created by the College but by outside firms, they were transferred to the College and were clearly used by the Estates Department in the same way as the files they created themselves. It therefore seemed appropriate to list them as College records.
