Administrative / Biographical history

Charles Old Goodford (1812-1884) came to Eton in May 1824 as an Oppidan but was elected a King's Scholar in July and entered College in September 1824. In 1830 he was placed on the roll for King's College Cambridge which he entered the following year. He became a fellow there in 1834 (resigning on his marriage in 1844) and returned to Eton as an assistant master in 1835. He became Head Master in 1853, beginning a process of reform. He would have preferred to stay in that post but felt unable to refuse the Crown nomination to the Provostship, which he accepted in 1862. From 1848 he also held the family living of Chilton Cantelo, Somerset.

Content description

These papers cover his period as assistant master, Head Master and Provost and also include many private letters and a collection of autographs. Of particular interest are the papers relating to cricket matches at Lord's.

Associated material

A small group of letters relating to controversy over cricket at Lord's was purchased by Vice-Provost Macindoe and now forms ED 219. Further letters will be found in papers of the Registrar, the Bursar and the Provost and Fellows. Papers relating to the Public Schools Commission and subsequent reforms should also be consulted (ECR/60/6/3 and ECR/60/7/3). Papers relating to the Racquet Courts, built in 1861, are SCH/HM/CAA/4 and letters on reform at Eton and King's can be found among Provost James' papers at COLL/P6/36.
