Provost Goodford: Letter from Sir Thomas Dyke Acland

Acknowledges letter from Goodford. Boys respect his straightforwardness. No doubt his objections to putting modern languages into regular school hours are right but it is a serious matter. Curious that Goodford mentions what he himself suggested in a letter to Johnson, namely making French an optional subject in the school examination. Has had a letter from Mr Hawtrey and if voluntary mathematics give scope for teaching those who benefit or who need it he is satisfied but feels that 3 hours a week is not enough to teach Euclid and algebra as well as arithmetic. Mathematical School a thoroughly subordinate element admitted on sufferance. Comments on First Annual Report of the Delegacy of Examinations; public schools may need to pay more attention to English grammar.
