Hopes he will get a hearing for his hearty admiration of Eton system. His sons have gained a great deal through Mr Johnson and in school as they and his father and brothers, Harrovians, acknowledge. Admires way in which elements of mathematics must be mastered before progress can be made but wonders whether it is wise to keep boys so long at arithmetic exclusively. Acknowledged at Cambridge that geometry should advance with arithmetic and algebra. His sons knew a little algebra on arrival; younger loves mathematics but does not understand rule of three or decimals; proposes to send elder to Mr Ottley or Mr Hale for private coaching to get him through Artillery exam. Admiration for Mr Hawtrey. Proposes to send eldest to Evans for drawing and wants part of time spent on architectural drawing. Would like to see the sort of drawing the Department of Science and Art promotes enter into public education. Are not Eton boys at a disadvantage compared with Rugby because French is private or extra. Places classical discipline above all objects but religion (except manly sports) but only powerful minds are fully capable of this as an exclusive element of training. Thanks for Goodford's judicious advice on leaving books
