Administrative / Biographical history

Edward Craven Hawtrey's family had been connected with Eton since the 17th century. His father Edward was a Fellow from 1792-1803, his aunts were dames, and his mother was the sister of Dr Foster, Head Master 1765-1773. Edward himself came to the school as an Oppidan in 1799 and was elected a King's Scholar in 1803. In 1807, he went to King's College, Cambridge, becoming a Fellow in 1810. He tutored the son of Mr Gurdon of Litton Hall, Norfolk, and then of Charles, 2nd Earl Talbot (1777-1849), before becoming in 1814 an assistant master at Eton. In 1834 he became the Head Master in succession to Dr Keate and instituted many reforms in both the work and the organisation of the school. He was a fine linguist and acquired a notable library as well as publishing a number of translations. From 1835-1854 he was Rector of Ewhurst, Sussex and from 1854 to his death (after a brief tenure of Farnham Royal, accepted and resigned the same year) Vicar of Mapledurham. He was the last Provost to be buried in College Chapel.
