Papers of Provost Davies, 1791 - 1809
Series
Educated at Eton as a King's Scholar and then at King's College, Cambridge, of which he was a fellow 1759-1773, Davies was an assistant master at Eton from 1760-1773. In 1773 he was appointed Head Master. Ten years later, a mass resignation of the assistant masters was immediately followed by a serious rebellion by the boys and it is perhaps surprising that he not only remained in post until 1791 but was then elected Provost. From 1782-1791 he was a Canon of Windsor, and from 1774-1804 Rector of Scaldwell, Northamptonshire.
He was a generous benefactor to both Eton and King's, leaving money to Eton for a scholarship for a superannuated King's Scholar.
1794 - 1810
Provost Goodall, who was his executor, describes his death in COLL/P/1/5/20 and there are papers relating to his estate, which was not fully settled by the time Provost Goodall himself died in 1840, in MISC/F/6
Two letters from Provost Davies were found loose in a volume relating to College livings (ECR 60/11/4/1/2) and have been kept with it. They show that he was in poor health and suggest he was dependent on opium, but still took thought for the College.
